What is Dombrov?

The name Dombrov comes from a user name that was assigned to me more than twenty years ago by a proprietary online/BBS service before the days when Internet had yet started. It is actually my last name but drops the “ski” from Dombrovski. The Dombrov name has just sort of stuck with me - is easier for people to remember and pronounce - and is definitely not a reflection that I am trying to hide my Polish ancestry which I am actually proud of. The small business known as Dombrov Sports Replays is mostly a “one man show” although my wife occasionally will help out in various capacities. Some people may question the wisdom of using this as a “brand” name for selling a game but it is indeed unique so it will probably remain Dombrov unless there is a day where a marketing strategy determines it needs to be changed.

My primary motivation for producing Dombrov Baseball is the enjoyment and passion I get out of playing sports replay games, especially baseball. The Sports Illustrated Baseball board game (which became SuperStar Baseball) was my first experience at playing such a game and that was followed shortly after with Sports Illustrated Football which later became PayDirt. I was thoroughly fascinated by the colorful presentation of the game and throughout the 1970’s I spent countless hours enjoying both of these games. Eventually as personal computers became part of the every day lives for many of us I evolved away from the SI board game and tried several different computer baseball games. While many of these games had some fine qualities I always felt (and still do) that I get my best gaming satisfaction from the SI game.

So a few years back I started searching the web for SI Baseball and was very pleased to see that there was still an interest, albeit a niche following. This was a great discovery for me but the geek in me also thought it would be cool if this fine board game was computerized. I looked around for a while but soon realized there wasn’t such a thing. Since I had always wanted to develop my own baseball game I thought it would be a good fit for me to design and code the program using SI Baseball as a base gaming engine. My original objective was to present the game in a way similar to if you were playing the board game on your kitchen table, but also be able to use the computer to keep stats and do all of those things many of us liked to do but found to be very time consuming with our busy lives. So this is basically what brought about the development of Dombrov Baseball. The game has since evolved and has had many new enhancements but the original table top concept is still an available option for playing the game.

This is now the fourth major release of Dombrov Baseball and as you would expect I think the game keeps getting better every year. This might be my biased opinion but I am highly confident that the game can stand up to and compete or perhaps exceed any computer baseball program on the market (the 30-day risk-free trial is meant to “walk the talk” and see if you agree with that statement). The evolution and improvements to the program are the results of lots of great ideas that came from the gaming community. I take a lot of pride in being able to offer this and am very grateful for the support from a faithful and growing gaming community. As with just about any product there is always room for improvements so I plan to keep a keen eye open for new innovations and ideas but also be careful to maintain the charm, simplicity and colorful presentation of the original board game. In support of this I hope to continue growing or improving the more than 50 available seasons and enhancing the game as time allows.
